Absalom Jones Celebration

February 2 @ 5:00 pm - 6:30 pm

The Cathedral honors its heritage with a celebration of Absalom Jones through the music of Harry
Burleigh on Sunday, February 2 at 5:00 P.M. Jones, a former slave who purchased his freedom,
founded the first Black Episcopal Congregation in Philadelphia at a time when pews were still
segregated by race, and his work for unity paved the way for Burleigh to be welcomed and celebrated
as a chorister at our own, Erie Cathedral. The Cathedral Choir with the choirs of Mercyhurst University provide a program recorded live by our local PBS station for use in documentaries on Burleigh. Don’t miss this extraordinary event.
